  • Matilda, who married someone from the family of Macdonald.
    • Their daughter Sophia, who married Edward's friend Augustus.
  • Claudia, who married Polydore, an Irishman.
    • Their daughter Laura, who "married" Edward Lindsay (Talbot).
  • Bertha, who had, probably by Philip Jones, a bricklayer,
    • a son Philander.
  • Agatha, who had, probably by Gregory Staves, a staymaker of Edinburgh,
    • a son Gustavus.
• Sir Edward Lindsay, Baronet; by his first wife (now dead) had two children:
  • Edward Lindsay (Talbot), whom his father wishes to marry Lady Dorothea, but who "married" Laura.
  • Augusta, who eventually married Graham.
  • Sir Edward eventually married Lady Dorothea, and had a son.
• His sister Philippa, who married a young fortune-hunter.
• Macdonald, a Scottish landowner, cousin to Sophia.
  • His daughter Janetta, engaged by her father to Graham, but who eloped with Captain M'Kenzie.
• Isabel, a friend of Laura.
  • Her daughter Marianne.
• A Scottish cottager (a widow).
  • Her daughter Bridget.
• Mary, servant to Polydore, Claudia, and Laura.
• William, servant to Edward.
