I've been reading a biography that is jointly about Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh called Ken & Em (sniff!) .
It has a few interesting bits about the work ET did on the S&S script. I think she worked on it for something like five years! It seems she obsessed over every detail and tried to avoid any historical anachronism whenever possible.
Emma discuss with a former prof of hers, Dr. Jean Gooder, which she though must be the poem that Mariann and Willoughby shared which proved to them how in sync their tastes and interests were. They decided that the poet who most expresses their sensibilities would be Byron, even though he would not have been know when the book was first written, only when it was published.
Another interesting bit of information is that in an early (1993) read-through of the script Amanda Root read one of the Dashwood sisters (it doesn't say which, but I would assume Elinor) I loved ET's work in the role, but I also think Amanda Root would have made a fine Elinor! Robert Hardy and Hugh Laurie were also involved in this early read-through.
