In response to Why IS Jane Austen so relevant in today's society?, written by kat n. on November 10, 1997 at 22:26:53

I personally love Jane Austen for several reasons, one is
the fact that her characters' experiences, to a high degree,
still touch us today. Who among us never had to put up
with unpleasant people, being snubbed for some reason (
lack of money, etc.), dealing with family members who may not be all that you like them to be. Money is still a
very important and relevant issue in today's society
except people may not talk about it as much. We in general
still tend to judge people too much by their looks instead
of their characters. We still make mistakes and fall for the wrong people. What is so wonderful about Austen is her
sense of humour and her cynical eye which keeps the romance
in the story from being too sweet. I personally laugh out
loud when I read about Mrs. Elton and the unpleasant
sister-in-law in The Watsons since they remind me
of women I know. Consiering I am Chinese, it only proves
that Austen's observasion is universal. The only real
difference between her wonmen and women today is
the fact that now women can have an education, have a
job and BE INDEPENDENT and I am very grateful for this change.
