In response to Why IS Jane Austen so relevant in today's society?, written by kat n. on November 10, 1997 at 22:26:53

...universality. Anyone who writes this well about the trials and tribulations of "everyday" people will never be dated. We're not all landed gentry, but we can still relate to the slight felt when one is not invited somewhere (Emma) or is insulted within her hearing (Elizabeth). We all feel stupid and out of place at times (Catherine). We all have the urge at times to say just exactly what's on our minds, to heck with society's rules and consequences (Marianne). And we all need to believe that our patience and good sense will be rewarded (Elinor, Anne, Fanny). Greed, lust, snobbery, self-deception; generosity, humor, love, compassion. It's all there!
