Good points, Cassia. I'm glad to hear the producers were motivated by love of Ms. Austen's work. I can certainly see the demand now more than ever for short emotional vacations. Not only is today's world more complicated and more stressful for families with both parents in the workforce, there are fewer opportunites for escape on television than when I was growing up. TV programming is predominantly, it seems, "reality" based, with all the emphasis on overwrought cops shows and hospital shows. Many of the more popular sitcoms are dealing with serious issues, as well. If you don't get enough real life drama during the day, tune in at night. No wonder we're demanding period pieces.
