Marianne and Helen Huntingdon

I'm beginning to form a mini obsession with The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I've never read Anne Bronte, but I loved the recent PBS version of the novel. I taped it and watched about 5 times already.
It got me to thinking about Marianne (again) and how she might be similar to Helen Huntingdon. In fact, it suggested to me one possible reason why there is such a gulf in our feelings about Marianne's outcome. To some of us, Willoughby is the equivalent of Huntingdon, and to some of us Brandon is the equivalent of Mr. Borum, from whose tediousness Huntingdon "rescues" young Helen at the ball.
But probably both are extreme views. If only JA made things easier by not writing characters of such complexity! ;)
