RE: Willoughby is in the position to "regret" Marianne, because he gave her up to acquire financial ease.


I think it's also important to remember that Willoughby's behavior was the cause of his loss of fortune. He then promptly broke with Marianne, but in such in a way that she did not understand the finality. We never do learn what words they exchanged during this important meeting, and how misleading he was, or how misleading her heart's interpretation of his words. Surely this must be a very superficial regret of the loss of Marianne on Willoughby's part -- after, all he romances and impregnates a woman and takes no responsibility for his actions.
