I completely agree with you, Lizzie! Well said!

I might add that perhaps no one does "get over" their first love. The feelings in a first love might seem so passionate because one has never experienced anything of the sort before.

I still wonder "what if" about the one I loved at 17, but I can't say I have regrets about him, or would have been better off or happier with him. Quite the contrary!

And truthfully, how many among us, want the same thing we wanted at 17 (in which case I would be married to, or probably divorced from, a musician in a rock band!)

I think it might be the same for Marianne. The strength of her feelings in her first love hit her full force. Her mistake was in believing that one's first love is by definition their only true love, and she came to realize that this is simply just not true. She had not only herself as an illustration of this point, but her husband, her brother-in-law, and her own father.
