And I think JA, with her gift for irony, would have made some comment about their marriage if it were less than ideal.

I donīt think Jane Austen would ever own that one of her heroines might (in the future) be unhappy in marriage. Marriage seems to be the answer to all feminine needs in her novels. All the heroines get their "dream marriage", it seems. I personally think that in Marianne`s case, it was just a way of smoothing away all the edges, wrapping up the whole thing and tieing it with the bow of conventionality. Too bad.
