In response to THE END, how does everyone feel?????, written by Rita on October 20, 1997 at 20:41:37
] To be frank, I now look at the end of S&S quite differently- I feel sad for Marianne and Brandon.
] Marianne has lost a part of her (that), I find tragic........
] I now leave the question open???????????????
I'm with you and Louisa on this one, Rita. I feel like Marianne's story is the most tragic that JA ever wrote, but then instead of admitting it's a tragedy, JA seems to want to gloss it over as just a youthful delusion being overthrown. If that is all it was, why is Marianne so moved when Elinor finally tells her about Willoughby's confession? It is because there was something real there. If we are supposed to believe Marianne's romance with Willoughby is just a flighty teenage thing, we should see her crying her eyes out then, at the drop of a hat, falling for the next prince riding up on a white horse and raving about the next guy as much as she did about Willoughby. But she doesn't.
Brandon is a good guy, but somehow I just don't believe that he'll ever speak to her true spirit the way Willoughby did.
