I don't feel sad for them--quite the contrary. Marianne, had she and Willoughby stayed together, was headed straight for a living hell (excuse my language). There would have been a beautiful, headily romantic honeymoon, and they might have been happy for a short while after, but not for long. He was too shallow and too selfish. If he allowed something like money to separate them, what if some real tragedies and stresses had come their way?
Who among us was not devastated when her "first love" didn't pan out? Few people marry the first person they fall in love with. The difference here is that when the "first love" breaks up, most of us don't have another man waiting in the wings, responsible, respectful, devoted, and caring.
As for the Colonel, he thought he would never love again. He had shut off his emotions from everyone, and was living like a man who would never wake up from a bad dream. How wonderful for him to first of all find someone he could love again, then, thinking he had no chance, to win her after all, and over the years of their marriage become more and more happy to be with him!
I can't call that a sad ending!!!
