] Maybe Diana was the Marianne figure, and the Queen the Elinor

I once read a biography of the Queen (well, there was nothing else around at the time) and one of the things thatwas emphasised strongly was her sense of duty, and of destiny. She grew up knowing that she would be queen and that her life was mapped out for her. She was quoted as saying that it gave her comfort to know that her every minute was planned well in advance. Another quote was all about how her personal feeling on things should never get in the way of the job she had to do. She also grew up with a Marianne- the volatile and rebellious Princess Margaret.

The Queen is now an old lady, and after a lifetime of doing not what she wants, but what her job requires of her, I think it's hardly fair to criticise her for not crying in public. She has never been allowed any other emotional outburst in her life.
