Marianne, had she been Queen, probably would have required the entire country to wear mourning clothes for weeks, don't you think?
Maybe Diana was the Marianne figure, and the Queen the Elinor - it's a pity they couldn't have a similar affection for one another, although I suppose their roles as mother and wife of Charles would make that very difficult.
Both sides can go too far - both in their own behaviour and in blaming the others for not behaving as they do, which I think is what happened when the people criticized the Queen for not behaving as they thought Diana would have wanted her to, in effect.
