This is one of the scenes which made me want to slap Marianne for being so insensitive. She takes pride in being so feelings-oriented, yet Elinor is much more considerate of others' feelings. She pays no more than a prefunctory attention to Brandon, and just practically pushes the flowers away to be put in a vase. And her behavior (in the movie) when he gives her his knife and her phrase "These are not from the hothouse" makes me want to shake her again. I think Brandon heard the phrase, but even if he didn't, after Marianne's behavior, he could hardly not notice that something was up.
And speaking of tactless, Sir John takes the first prise-His "we know when we are not wanted) is just twisting the knife in the wound. He isn't very thoughtful of his best friend's feelings, is he?
