I too am not sure whether he heard this line (guess I'll have to watch again to make sure). But I always thought that he sensed something was up. The ladies are in a great excitement and anticipation of something, and it is obviously not to do with his arrival. His lovely bouquet of flowers is virtually ignored. It is not hard to tell when someone has been waiting expectantly to see someone and that someone is not YOU.

I agree that AR played this scene to perfection !
