In response to Elinor and the Queen: Out of fashion?, written by Arnessa on September 08, 1997 at 12:10:08
It is interesting reading your post. I was brought up in a fairly traditional Chinese way. This means I am some what repressed and do not like to show too much emotion or lose control even though my temper and emotion are volatile, so I like Elinor a lot better than Marianne. I don't generally like the Marianne type, I find them too self centred and too emotional. I suppose we just prefer the character that we identify more with. As for the Queen, I don't know if it is true that people want to see her cry. I think people just want to have some sign that life is not per usual (i.e. continuing summer vacation as if nothing happened). Although it really made no difference whether she stayed in Scotland or returned to London, it is just the perception that if she continued her vacation, it meant she did not care. When you are a public figure, perception is everything.
