Although I love Colonel Brandon. . . I will admit that there is something about Willoughby. To me, he is one of those truly magnetic people - you know all of his faults: he's greedy and he's got an illegitimate child and who knows what else he's done! Yet, if he asked you for your right arm, you would not be able to say "no" to him. He is a natural charmer. . . Part of you wants to hate him for all the pain he has caused to others, but you cannot feel that way forever. Even Elinor admits to it! I think somewhere down deep he does have a heart because he did love Marianne, even though it is difficult for me to acknowledge it. I think this is one of the reasons why S&S is such a unique JA novel - no other novel evokes such a divided reaction to a relationship. . . JA was under Willoughby's spell too.
