opposites attract?

One sleepy Saturday afternoon, my two sons, 12 and 9, watched S & S with me. Afterwards I asked them which sister appealed to them most, and was I surprised!
My eldest, who is the sensible one, went for Marianne, and my youngest, who is the wild one of our family, went for Elinor! I started thinking that if you accept the opposite attraction theory, shouldn't Willoughby have been attracted to Elinor instead? And, shouldn't Marianne have fallen in love with Edward. Maybe it doesn't work that way on all occasions.
Both my sons identified most with Col. B. and not the 'blinky guy'. They were truly grossed out by Robert Ferrars.
