] Although appearing something of an airhead, Lucy was in fact rather cunning. ...I belive she was rather manipulative. Did anyone else get this from JA or S&S2?
I didn't think so the first time I watched S&S2, but more recently, I've come around to that view. (I don't remember anything particular from the the book and I don't have time right now to look at the text.) Certainly if coming between Elinor and Edward had been Lucy's intention, she couldn't have done it better. It's hard to believe all those perfect barbs were innocent -- telling a perfect stranger her deepest secret, talking about how honorable Edward is, etc.
One reason I think that Lucy was being manipulative is that Lucy said two things that were directly contradictory. When they first met, she told Elinor that Edward spoke highly of her, but later, she tells Elinor that she isn't worried about Edward's affections straying, because he hadn't spoken about any other woman in particular -- making Elinor think that Edward wasn't interested in her.
I don't remember the title of the story, but Jimmy has a piece of fanfic that makes this point strongly.
