I agree. Willoughby is much more complex and flawed though he is-he makes no pretentions for goodness. I really enjoyed the Hardy description and it definitely fits. Will has a disarming frankness. I love his "she knew I had no regard for her when I married her."Speaking of HArdy-I've always thought there were parallels between MArianne and Willoughby and Eustacia and Damon Wildeve in Return of the Native.
