Duels: swords v. pistols

] My theory is that when they did meet in the duel, that Brandon missed on purpose. I think that as a soldier and as a sportsman who hunted, it is highly unlikely that he would have missed.May I put in a word for W. We never see him as a physical coward, only a moral one, and he was a capital sportsman, so he wouldn't presumably miseed as well. So, either he was noble as well, or neither of them were sufficiently good shots (I've read that it is much harder to fire correctly in a duel than in the field).
But somehow, I always thought they fought with swords, a form of duelling still quite popular. That would explain why neither of them was dead, since most duels ended when one of the opponents was wounded.
