Brandon and Willoughby Duel..or Not????

I am very uncertin about the matter of what transpired when Brandon and Willoughby met in London after Eliza's daughter's pregnancy. If they met to duel, why did they emerge unwounded? Why was Brandon unable to convince Willoughby to act honorably? I'm confused!
