In response to London Trip, written by Vivienne on July 27, 1998 at 13:17:13

Back to the Sense and Sensibility board ] Does anyone know the approximate date they return from London? I have looked in the novel but I cannot seem to find it.

In chapter 1 of volume III, Marianne finds out that Elinor has known about the engagement between Lucy Steele and Edward Ferrars for four months. "Wnen Lucy first came to Barton-park last November, she told me in confidence of her engagement," Elinor admits. So, the engagement was made public in March. But then in chapter 3 of volume III, we find out that "the Miss Dashwoods had now been rather more than two months in town" but that the trip home might take a "little more than three weeks' time" since they planned to stay at Cleveland (the Palmers' house). I would guess that the women are going home in April, by the time the journey is underway.

Does this sound accurate? I just perused the novel quickly. (I have a set of the Oxford Illustrated Jane Austen in several volumes. Every other novel has a chronology appended to it. I suppose no one bothered with this one.)

A more exact JA scholar may be able to provide a more precise date. : ) Hope this helps.
