I always thought she was trying to show the disadvantages of being either too much one way or the other. Perhaps Elinor did not open herself up to much public riducule as did Marianne---but remember, she did suffer at the hands of Lucy, also the snubbing of her by Edward's mother. These private, subtle slights can be just as humilating. especially to someone like Elinor. Marianne would probably just ignore them or speak her mind on the subject (as was the case at the dinner with Edward's mother).
