Honking and Shuffling - LOL!

It's been most interesting to read what you all have had to say about this scene, and I essentially agree that it was an incredibly emotional moment for Elinor, but that ET could have handled the scene better. However, I NEVER would have thought of the term "honking," which wonderfully describes the noise she was making! *raising hat*
As for the "shuffle" out of the room, I think I'd be more inclined to call it a "mass retreat." To me, it was a straightforward presentation of the fact that it was a situation that nobody would get out of without some embarrassment, and the mass exodus without explanation was a bit more honest than if Mrs. Dashwood had said "oh dear, I think I smell dinner burning," or "heavens! I think there are donkeys eating the cabbage!"
And, after all, the poor guy already had one hysterical female to propose to.... he didn't need a whole room full of them!
