I read an interview with ET a few months back in which she described the emotion she was trying to convey during the scene you mention. She described cleaning out the safe deposit box after her Father's death, and how she had been in complete control up to that time. Illness, funeral, burial..during none of it did she break down. Then, during the act of going to the bank, she was faced with those things that her Father found to be most important, important enough to put somewhere especially safe. ET said that she just broke down there, "honking" and unable to stop, and the bank folks didn't know what to do to be of help to her.
The smile..I don't know what to say about it, except that I thought it was done quite well.
