Back to the Sense and Sensibility board ] A duel with pistols was chancier than a duel with swords. A sword fight would not end until one of the duellists was wounded or at the other person's mercy. A pistol duel would end after one exchange of shots. . . .


At least the period fiction I've been reading indicates 2 exchanges rather than 1. So you'd have to miss twice.

At 10 paces for each side, a pistol duel would be held at 40-50 feet separation. Certainly the limit for the firearms of the day, but not at all impossible.
