Are Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet too good of actors?
That could be the problem. The moods and expressions conveying their regard for one another may have been too subtle.
In the book, once Marianne falls in love with Willoughby, people begin to think that Brandon is in love with Elinor because he spends so much time talking to her! Brandon is not a man who shows his feelings. He learned to control them in order to avoid gossip.
