Edward's duty and Willoughby's failure

] --and of course he is a foil for Willoughby's courtship methods.Although I had seen the contrast between Elinor's and Marianne's being crossed in love in relation to Edward and Willoughby, I had not before made the thematic connection between their behavior. It does seem to enforce a standard of honorable (not simply pragmatic) behavior. Nevertheless, although I now better understand Edward as a thematically imperative character, he seems to be a washout as a hero and certainly is far from being in the same class as Col. Brandon.
