In response to thanks, and has anyone seen S&S1 (BBC, 1985)?, written by Jane Farmer on April 17, 1998 at 05:06:24

Back to the Sense and Sensibility board Unfortunately S&S from 1985 is one of the lesser BBC serilisations. Severely undercast in most part, awfull costumes and weak dialoque. The cast includes Irene Richards who is a good Charlotte in the earlier P&P as Ellinor. Marianne is played by a young actress who appear sour and unappealing. And it is an open matter who is the most boring, the Edward,Brandon or Villoughby. But the Fanny is great.

However BBC did an earlier version which was better cast in the early seventies. Elinor was played by Joanna David (who is Aunt Gardiner in P&P where her real life daugher is Georgiana, Edward was played but Robin Ellis (Ross poldark You can also catch him in Merchant Ivory The Europeans. Marianne by Ciaran Madden, who later appears as Emma Thompsons friend in Fortunes of War and Villoughby by Clive Francis (also in Poldark). Mrs. Jennings was played by Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth Bucket). Unfortunately it is not available on video. But we remember this as charming.
