] I am quite confused by this relationship, i had no problem believing that Wickham was a jerk but found Willoughby was a little more complex.

] It seemed as if he did love Marianne. I find it difficult to believe that the relationship was not real. Can anybody help?

I think Willoughby is a closer relative to Henry Crawford than t Wickham. Like Henry he originally planned to "have a little fun" at the expense of Marianne's heart. His past behaviour catches up with him, however, and he chooses to marry a fortune instead of marrying Marianne. Also like Henry Crawford he learns too late that he does indeed love our heroine but his actions have put her out of his reach, if Wickham ever loved anyone it was himself.
