I think so too, Cheryl (and Rita).

In some ways, he's more of a jerk (what he does to Eliza), and in other ways he's less, because I think he really does mean to marry Marianne in spite of the fact that she is poor. Until the roof falls in on him, so to speak. Then he's pretty deplorable. I think he should simply have written to Marianne and told her the truth when she wrote to him. But then, where would the story be...
