Actually, I found the Miss Steele of the film far less appealing than the one in the novel. Lucy watches Elinor closely for signs of Elinor's affection for Edward. She says that she is of a jealous nature and would notice if Edward spoke much about another woman (which he had been, Lucy tells Elinor that she'd heard about Elinor from Edward). Plus she hears Mrs. Jennings' teasing about "the mysterious Mr. F." Then Lucy gossips about Marianne to Robert Ferrars at the ball.
BTW, does anyone else think that the actress playing Lucy Steele in S&S2 looks very much like Tonya Harding (the notorious ice skater)?
IMHO Emma Thompson did an exceptionally good job of reducing the plot to two hours without losing the character and tone of the novel.
