Back to the Sense and Sensibility board ] I also thought that Lucy was not cold and calculating, or haughty, in S&S2. Whenever I watch the movie, I always have the impression that Lucy sees Elinor as a sister with whom she can talk about anything. S

I didn't see Lucy this way in the movie. I was so familiar with the book when I saw the movie, I may have brought my version of the book Lucy to the movies with me. Next time I watch it, I will try to let go of my preconceptions.

I think in the book, she is one of the cruelist people that JA ever invented. I think she deliberately tortures Elinor, particularly at the end, when she manages by remote control to convince Elinor that she (Lucy) has become Mrs. Edward Ferrars. She is one nasty little witch. When do we get to slap her?

It's interesting, though, that even Elinor can find qualities in Lucy, like intelligence, that she doesn't despise. JA wasn't much into black and white.
