Miss Lucy Steele

After having memorized S&S2, I decided it was time for me to read the novel in JA's own words. (I was very happy to find it was even more wonderful than the movie! Of course!) I noticed, first of all, there are two Miss Steeles. Also, it is much easier to dislike Lucy in the novel--she really is despicable!--, while in the film she doesn't seem as calculating. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I think Lucy is much better in the novel and adds to Elinor's misery, which makes me all the more sympathetic with her. But, perhaps, I am missing something in the film adaptation.
If this topic has been discussed to death, please forgive me.
