In response to Locations of S&S2?, written by BeccaTT on March 10, 1998 at 14:26:27
I've been thinking about going down to visit some of the houses and locations of S&S - has anyone been to any of them and do you know how many of the houses are open to the public? I know the one for Cleveland is a National Trust one but the others??
I recommend that you hit Salisbury, Wiltshire, while you're in England. Mompesson House is located in Salisbury, on the Cathedral Close (a sort of commons or square next to Salisbury Cathedral), and it's National Trust. This is the building used for Mrs. Jennings' London townhouse - the exterior, the dining room, a bedroom (where Marianne cries her eyes out over Willoughby), and two sitting rooms. Near Salisbury, in Wilton, is Wilton House, where they filmed the big ball scene in the famous "Double Cube." It's privately owned, but open to the public. When I was there, they had Marianne's peach gown, Elinor's dark green shantung, and Fanny's black lace on display. On the same jaunt, you can do Stonehenge and Old Sarum, if you're so inclined. And don't forget the cathedral - it's supposedly the one Thomas Hardy used (under a fictional name) in Jude the Obscure.
Cleveland is actually Montacute House, which is indeed National Trust. It's located near Yeovil, in Somerset. For more information on National Trust properties and passes, &c., go to the National Trust Web Site. If you're planning on seeing Lyme Hall and Sudbury Hall (Pemberley exteriors and interiors, respectively, in P&P2) in addition to Montacute and Mompesson, a pass might be a wise investment.
