Missing characters

Having never seen S&S1, I am curious. Were Lady Middleton and Miss Steele left out of that version as they were in S&S2? Although they were not MAJOR characters in the novel, I found their omission in S&S2 a little bit trying. Why would Mrs. Jennings and Sir John live together alone? Any answer is appreciated. Thanx :)
