] Does anyone find themselves in an opposite position? (Oldest child liking the youngest sister best, for example)I have two older sisters, 6 and 3 years older, but I've always felt much closer to Elinor. My eldest sister is closer to E than M, but the other is M and Mrs. Dashwood (and probably Kitty and Lydia Bennet) all rolled into one. By the time I was 8 I felt years older than her, and now I'm landed with all the family responsibilities and worries while she acts the idiot and screws up her life and those around her. I have very little sympathy for Marianne's lack of self-discipline, and only envy her a man like Col. Brandon! The nice thing about E is she's not an unsympathetic prig like she could have so easily been. She has feelings and dreams, but bottles them up so as not to distress others by letting rip. Self-restraint is not a fashionable 20th century virtue, however, which is why a lot of people don't like Elinor.
