I saw an interview with Emma Thomson where she said that not many actresses who auditioned for the main female roles were suitable but that almost everyone who auditioned for Fanny could play her as she was a type everyone was sufficiently familiar with to give a decent representation of. Or maybe that's because she is a study in faults (which are always easier to depict than virtues.
