Wickham smart. Willoughby dumb.

In response to Who's the worse villain, Wickham or Willoughby?, written by Liz M on February 12, 1998 at 08:26:26

Wickham was smart. He probably realized when Darcy found them that Darcy cared very much about the reputation of the Bennet family. He may not have known why, for sure, but he knew that by marrying Lydia he could solve his financial problems.

In S&S Willoughby was given a chance to redeem himself and kept his enheritance had he married Eliza. His solution was to refuse and run off to London to find a rich wife. Both solutions deprived him of Marianne. Had he held out, by risking financial ruin, and married Marianne he would have probably been forgiven by his relative and been given his enheritance (as happened in the book) back.
