In response to Sense and Sensibility differences between the movie and the book, written by Monique on January 25, 1998 at 15:59:37

A few scenes/characters not in the film:

1) Willoughby offers Marianne the inappropriate gift of a horse...which, at Elinor's urging she declines...

2) Anne Steele and Mrs Ferrars do not make an appearance (though Mrs. Ferrars is mentioned often enough, and her influence is certainly there throughout) Also, as someone else previously noted, Lady Middleton and her children are absent from the film...

3) Willoughby's confession scene, when he comes to visit Marianne during her illness...

4) The dinner scene with Mrs. Ferrars and the whole gang, in which Elinor is snubbed...

Also, the film added some things which were not in the book:

1) Willoughby does visit Marianne after her fall---but he is her only visitor----Colonel Brandon does not appear with flowers of any kind---be they hothouse or wild (but, oh, isn't it nice to have that scene with Alan Rickman!)

2) The gift of the piano to Marianne by Brandon----well, we know which Jane Austen book that idea was borrowed from--- of course, it is a nice touch, though I always wondered about the propriety of Colonel Brandon doing this: it seems slightly out of character, though maybe someone else will post an opinion on this....

3) Also, several people, Edward included, believed that Brandon had shifted his affections to Elinor----which causes a very comical scene between Elinor and Mrs. Jennings--and probably much inner torment for Edward. But this issue is not even addressed in the film.

While the movie is wonderful....I think the book must be read to fully appreciate Jane's genius and artistry. Film producers can't do everything for us---thank goodness, or else we'd have little to discover for ourselves. :-)

Probably there are many other differences that someone else will bring to our attention....but these are just what I can remember off the top of my head
