] Say what you will about Hugh Grant, he was terrific there, so uncomfortable and confused.
] In a simialr vein the scene where Elinor tells Edward of the living offered by Col. Brandon, was lovely... very restrained, but with great emotion roiling under the surface...

Most of my friends don't appreciate Jane Austen (...still trying to convert them!), and my movie-loving acquaintances thought S&S slightly boring...It was Ang Lee's "undercurrents" and unspoken thoughts that they did not catch, therefore in some scenes they simply were waiting for SOMETHING to happen...Silence seemed to slow the pace for them since they didn't consider what thoughts were crowding the room of silence...I suppose it helps to read the novel or the Screenplay Diaries...else much goes right past people's noses.-karen l
