Some people are not capable of "being" happy. All the positive qualities of human beings require risk and vunerability.
People like Lucy are so controlling of what they say or respond to that they cannot be open- thus, no happiness and love.
So, for such people being rich is a "victory", as related to being poor(and miserable anyway!).
