] I thought the director used the two cups of tea to relate the long time period it took to find Marianne and therefore related the seriousness of her being wet and cold for so long which led to the infectous fever.

The first time I saw this movie, I was sure something was missing between these two cups of tea. My first thought was that the film broke and the projectionist spliced it back together leaving out a scene or two.
If you read the screenplay, you'll see there was a scene of Brandon trudging up a steep hill in the rain. Although the scene was shot, it didn't make it into the film.
