] Brigham Young was concerned that his daughters and many of the young ladies in the Utah territory were adapting the "foolish and vain" things of the world. He started what he called "The Retrenchment Society", which encouraged the young girls to wear simplier, more modest attire and simplier hair styles. They did NOT walk around looking like Quakers. Mormons never have. The idea was to promote simplier fashions, as opposed to the worldly ideals.

] So it would appear that "retrenchment" means to adapt a simplier life style.

And even today, the Retrenchment Society still exists in the Mormon church. It has undergone several name changes and is now know as "Young Women." Young women from 12-18 participate in this program.

BTW, the church put out a movie dramatizing the formation of the Retrenchment Society several years ago. Pretty interesting.
