Retrenchment in an 19th Century Context

] Based on that, and my own gut feeling, I would say that "retrenching" meant adopting a more economical way of life, and a acceptance of a (much?)lower standard of living.

Brigham Young was concerned that his daughters and many of the young ladies in the Utah territory were adapting the "foolish and vain" things of the world. He started what he called "The Retrenchment Society", which encouraged the young girls to wear simplier, more modest attire and simplier hair styles. They did NOT walk around looking like Quakers. Mormons never have. The idea was to promote simplier fashions, as opposed to the worldly ideals.

So it would appear that "retrenchment" means to adapt a simplier life style.
