The New York Times had an article about this recently. It's true...Americans are dutifully rising to their feet more and more often for ordinary performances. It's like grade inflation. Whatever happened to leaping up in pure exaltation, and saving it for really stellar moments? Now, if an audience wants to show genuine rapture, I suppose they'll have to start jumping up and down.
