I've found this quote in a lot of material concerning Jane Austen, so I thought I"d post it here:
Manners are of more importence than laws. Upon them, in a great measure, the law depends. the Law touches us but here, and there, and now and then. Manners are what vex and soothe, corrupt or purify, exalt or debase, barbarise or refine us...They give their whole form and colour to our lives. According to their quality, they aid morals, they supply them or totally destroy them.
