Caroline, I just checked a book out of my library entitled: A Reader's Guide to the Ninetheenth Century English Novel," by Julia Prewitt Brown. Ms. Brown seems to be writing for the unknowledgable American reader who encounters references to culture/customs of this time period. She tries to compare some of these concepts with something the modern reader may be familar with, although in some cases, comparison is difficult. As with the concept of the peerage--she states we really don't have anything in comparison, thought certainly we have people of similar power and wealth in this country. Anyway, this book has cleared up some confusion for me---plus it's just plain fun to learn about another period in history in a different culture.
