Lesley's got it in a nutshell, here.(And soooo well put!)A Great Lady like Mrs Darcy, or Lady Catherine would have spent a lot of time playing social worker to her poor and needy tenants, in a time when Government handouts didn't really exist. She would also be responsible for almost everything that went on inside the house, such as budgeting and bill-paying, hiring and firing, seeing that the great corporation ran smoothly. Although the "Lord" was the CEO, he had to have assisstants, and a vice-pres.So she had a lot of power and authority, in a limited sphere.
